Same team, different name. The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, formally know as the Road Warriors, are an ice hockey team located in Greenville, South Carolina. Although the name is changed, the team is still the same.

“No one could truly identify with the Road Warrior thing so they decided to find a theme that is on the rise here in Greenville, and that is the Swamp Rabbit trail,” says Biology Teacher Brent Fleming.

The Swamp Rabbit Trail has become a huge attraction in Greenville for runners, bikers, or just nature lovers. Since the trail is well known, Fred Festa, the owner of the team, decided to change the name of the team to make a stronger connection between the hockey team and Greenville.

“More people are going to want to know what the name and what’s the reason for it and that will force people into looking it up,” says Fleming.

The name change will intrigue people who are unfamiliar with Greenville to look up the significance behind the new name and attract more people to the trail.

Along with the positive reaction the name can bring to the trail; it might do an injustice to the team name. The team went from the menacing  Road Warriors to the very mundane Greenville Swamp Rabbits.

“The name change is strange. It makes the team seem less intimidating,” says Sophomore Taylor Rodrigue.

Although the name change may not please everyone, the team will still have supporters and fans cheering them on in the stands as they play.

“Once they see those guys out on the ice and realize it’s just a logo with history behind it won’t matter,” says Fleming.

The name shouldn’t matter. What will matter is how the team plays when game day comes.
