Where I’m From

“Know from whence you came. If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.” – James Baldwin (Photo courtesy of Tyler Davidson)

I am from pickup trucks,

From Chex mix and aluminum cans.

I am from the welcoming household

(Safe, warm, never could stay clean).

I am from yellow daylilies

Here today, gone tomorrow.

I’m from card games and stubbornness

From David and Melinda

I’m from the campers and the bargainers

From “Don’t be a moron” to “Love others as yourself.”

I’m from Jesus loves me, Sunday mornings at my church

I’m from Greenville and Scotland

Barbeque and Coca Cola

From the pistol my relative took off of a Japanese officer in World War II,

The burial of my relative alive and being unburied still alive the next day.

Inside the wooden chest in the hallway,

A collection of mementos, artifacts, and pictures

That tell a story,

Of where I come from.
