Christmas is all about giving gifts and showing appreciation for others. This year is the second annual celebration of a Blue Christmas, an appreciation campaign for police officers. A Blue Christmas was started by Simpsonville, SC resident Kevin Dunn. Dunn started this campaign after the death of Greenville police officer, Alan Jacobs, who died March of 2016. Although Kevin Dunn had no connection with the police officer, he was greatly affected by his death and decided to do something about it.

“[Jacob’s death] hit me hard; it still does…I guess. When it happened, it was the wrong time for me to hear about it, and it affected me deeply and emotionally. I cried as if I knew him, and, if I think about him now, I still do,” says Dunn.

Dunn felt that, as a community, we could somehow show appreciation for the officers who put their lives on the line for us every day. His idea was to hang up blue lights in his yard for Christmas.

“After hearing about Officer Jacobs, I thought that there has to be something that can be done to show support. I thought about the blue lights on the police cars, the blue uniforms, and thought, let’s do blue lights and call it a Blue Christmas,” says Dunn.

Kevin Dunn first spread his idea on Facebook, and received a lot of support. He was even interviewed by The Greenville News last year. Since then, the idea of a Blue Christmas has spread throughout the upstate. There is also an official song by musician Judy Pancoast for Dunn’s campaign called “Heroes in Blue”.

“Somebody the other day asked me what other ideas I had for the Blue Christmas campaign, and honestly, I haven’t thought that far,” says Dunn.

Each year, Kevin Dunn has done a Christmas light show at his house that people from all over the upstate travel to see. He has a homemade police officer Christmas decoration with blue lights in his front yard. It is to show support for his campaign as well as spread awareness of policemen’s service. Overall, his ultimate goal is to show support for our police officers, even if it’s only putting up his blue lights. Although there have been a few other campaigns run to support police officers all over the nation, it’s very uplifting to see one of these campaigns taking place so close to home. If you want to help support officers this holiday season, just add a little bit of blue to your holiday view.

“I want to see support and respect for police officers come out of my campaign. Basically, everything they do has been under a microscope, second guessed, and everyone seems to know better than they do. It’s a thankless job, most people never give it applause, and it’s more than an occupation. You have to have a calling for it,” says Dunn.
