When people mention dreams, they often imagine a variety of different scenarios. Dreams and nightmares are commonly talked about, and Hollywood has even created many different movies using the idea of dreams and nightmares. However, many people believe that dreams hold symbolic meaning, and often dedicate time interpreting them. Everyone has different dreams, yet some dreams tend to have similar symbols within in them. While researchers try to come up with underlying meanings behind dreams, the subject of interpreting dreams can be different for everyone.

“I used to have a dream that all of my adult teeth fell out and I looked like an old person,” says junior Camille Poindexter.

Dreams that involve teeth falling out are actually quite common and can symbolize fears about losing control over anything in your life; they also correspond to anxiety about the present. Dreaming about growing old most likely means that you feel you are inexperienced. You want to grow more experienced in life, and, if you feel a positive vibe in this dream, then you might just do that.

“I had a dream where I was driving and my vision got weird. It was like my vision stayed behind me, and I was driving my car from a distance. I started to lose control and I crashed,” says senior Erin Boukather.

Dreams like this are more rare, and can possibly symbolize several things. First, crashing a car during a dream can symbolize the fact that you feel you have no control over your life. You could feel helpless in a situation and want a way out. Having your vision stay behind you could possibly mean you feel that you cannot control your future, and do not know what you want to achieve in life.

“I had a dream one time that I woke up to a Duramax truck that my parents bought me,” says junior Max Hunt.

Dreaming about cars often symbolize your journey through life, therefore dreaming of a new truck could possibly mean that you are about to start a new journey, or that you just really want a nice truck.

“Well, I had this dream about this guy coming into my house and killed my family and me. Then I woke up sweating and terrified, but that’s more of a nightmare,” says junior Cassidy Dickson.

Nightmares, like dreams, are also very symbolic. To dream of dying is a common dream, and most people have died in a dream or nightmare at least once. Dying in a dream often means that you have strong feelings of failure in your life, or fear that someone is trying to embarrass or humiliate you. Dreaming of being murdered can mean that you feel that someone embarrassed you badly, or sabotaged a relationship with you.

“I had a dream I was a star in the World Cup,” says junior Alejandro Escobar.

To dream of success in something that you like often means that you feel content where you are in life and hope to use your talents for good. You may feel you have a chance to improve the world, and hope to do so. While dreams are very common, some people claim that they do not dream, or remember their dreams. This can be caused by people not fully going into “deep sleep,” thus causing them to not dream.

“I don’t remember my dreams, but I like to hear other people’s dreams. I find them intriguing to listen to,” says junior Mumbi Mungai.
