During the holiday season, it occurs to us how much we have to be thankful for: family, shelter, food, friends, clothes, the list goes on and on. However, many people go without the things we take for granted, about 795 million people globally live undernourished. This is caused, mainly, by poverty and conflict. Seven hundred sixty seven million people are living below the international poverty line of less than $1.90 per person per day, which doesn’t allow for the ability to get food, or the resources to grow and produce the food. One of the main reasons for the low income is conflict. Conflict affects almost every aspect of someone’s life, but severely affects the food sources available for an already scarce supply. More than half of the hungry people in the world live in countries affected by conflict, ranging from non-state and state-based violence to one-sided violence. Regardless of the cause, world hunger is still a major issue that affects about 13% of the world population. There are two ways that people, such as ourselves, can contribute to reducing famine: learning about the situation and action. Actions could include forms of influencing public policy, contributing financially, and working directly with the less fortunate. While these efforts are small, they can make a generous, and very real difference in someone’s life.
