Sports are a big part of Brashier. Although a small school, it offers a variety of fall and spring sports, such as Cross Country, Swimming, Softball, Basketball, Soccer, Baseball, Golf, and Volleyball. However, there are a lot of sports that Brashier does not offer. This past school year, sports like Tennis and Cheerleading have been suggested. As Brashier continues to grow, it would be ideal to add new sports.

“I think it’s important that we add more sports to the school because a lot of people may not be interested or good at the sports offered now,” says junior Chanel Teplik.

Not everyone is interested in the sports currently offered at Brashier, so how do you suggest new sports and get them approved? First, you would want to talk to the main coaches: Stallard and Horgan. They are ultimately the ones that talk to Mr. Sinclair about adding sports to the school. It’s also helpful to be prepared and know information about the sport. For example, it helps to know prices for uniforms and equipment. Finding a coach and place to practice is also important to deciding whether the school adds the sport or not.

“I would really love to see an Ultimate Frisbee team added to the school. It’s always something you do in PE, but never do as an actual sport in school. Plus, although it’s super hard, it’s also really fun,” says freshman Brianna Hargett.

Tennis is one of the main sports that has been requested for the next school year. Sophomore Chloe Brown has been working on setting up the Brashier Tennis team and has already spoken to the main coaches here at Brashier. Tennis is a game where either one person (Singles) or two people (doubles) hit a ball over a net, trying to score a point. It is a fall sport, meaning that it would start at the beginning of the next school year. Schools like Southside and Greenville High have girls and boys Tennis teams that we could compete against. Tennis would be an awesome sport to add to Brashier since it has many health benefits and is a fairly simple sport to play. Saying this, it’s a perfect sport for anyone. Not only is playing Tennis great exercise physically, it also keeps the mind exercised as the player tracks the ball.

“I thought it would be good to add a Tennis team since Brashier doesn’t really have any diversity in sports. Tennis is also a team sport, which is awesome since there aren’t too many of those at Brashier. I’m hoping that, by making a Tennis team, it will give those who like Tennis a chance to play it as well as represent their school,” says sophomore Chloe Brown.

Along with Tennis, Cheerleading and Lacrosse have been suggested this year. However, the decision in these sports officially being added lies in the hands of the students. Not everyone is interested in the sports currently offered and it’s important that the school offers sports that the students want.

“If Brashier does add these new sports, I’m sure that, if they find the right players, these teams will do well. We have a lot of talented athletes at this school and I’m sure that more will be discovered with the addition of tennis and other sports,” says junior Benjamin Yeargin.
