Rachel Etwaru is a junior at Brashier Middle College. She first joined the school when she was a sophomore and has loved it ever since. Rachel was born September 2nd, 2001, in Freehold, New Jersey. She has an older brother as well as a younger sister who will actually be attending Brashier next year. Rachel has a lot of hobbies such as reading and watching TV, which she spent a lot of her summer doing. She also attended multiple weddings and birthday parties during her summer break.

“My favorite things about this school are all the experiences I’ve had and all the friends I’ve made. In my free time, I love to hang out with my family and friends as well as do some puzzles if I feel like it. My grandma loves to bring word searches and puzzles when she visits,” says Etwaru.

Some of Rachel’s favorite subjects include Math, Science, and Art. Her least favorite subject is English because reading is less fun in class.

“The reason I like Math is because I understand it, I like Science because it’s hands on, and I like Art because I love to express myself. All the dissecting we have to do to in English to stories takes away from the enjoyment and the actual story plot,” says Etwaru.

Rachel has not yet decided what she wants to do in life yet, but her big dream is to become a singer.

“There are just so many options and I can’t decide,” Etwaru states.

She also has many role models such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Liam Payne, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and many more.

“I would say that my parents and my grandma are my biggest role models because they all had a hard time growing up in a third world country and now they’re here in America living and enjoying life,” says Etwaru.

Rachel’s parents and grandparents  grew up in Guyana, a country in South America. They were fascinated by the opportunities in America and decided to move here. Rachel’s family first moved to New York, but later moved to New Jersey and South Carolina. Her dad was the first person to move to the United States with his family and her mother came soon after. A few years after Rachel’s mother moved to the United States, Rachel’s other family members began to come here.

“This country was a symbol of new opportunities, especially for my family. When they had the opportunity to come, they took it,” Etwaru states.

One of the main reasons Rachel decided to join Newspaper was because she wanted to improve and build on her writing skills. She also said that it would look good on college applications.

“I can’t wait to start writing articles. I’m sure this year will be fun,” says Etwaru.
