Have you ever met someone who was distantly related to Chuck Norris? Meet Katelyn Kargol–a junior at Brashier Middle College.

“I enjoy reading, writing, and hiking with my dog, Katniss,” says Kargol.

During this past fourth of July week, while most kids were setting off their exploding rockets in the humid nighttime summer air, Katelyn Kargol was in Hawaii with her family.

“We toured the National Volcano Park, saw a shark, and took a helicopter ride around the island. This was actually my third time to Hawaii but I was really young the last few times,” says Kargol.

In addition to this tropical summer adventure, Katelyn attended a mission trip to the inner city of Cleveland, Ohio with her church.

“When I went on the mission trip I learned to love children under two and work with them,” says Kargol.

Her realization could possibly turn into a career since she enjoys helping others. As of right now though, Ms. Kargol is unsure of her post high school plans.

“I’m definitely planning on going to Greenville Technical College for two years and then transferring to a four year college,” says Kargol.

However, she does have an interest in animals and wants to train her dog Katniss to be a therapy animal for her Senior Project.

“Katniss was sort of like a therapy dog for me and I want to help others have the same experience,” says Kargol.

Katelyn struggled with depression and anxiety for a while and purchasing Katniss was a first step towards her complete recovery.

“Drawing and reading helped me calm down, and I also started my own blog to help kids who struggle through depression and anxiety like I did,” says Kargol.

As of right now one thousand people have viewed her blog.

“Actually, I joined Newspaper because of my blog, and I heard that the class was quite fun and relaxed” says Kargol.

This year in Newspaper, Katelyn is looking forward to broadening her horizons and writing about more topics, especially the current events in the news.

“I also joined Newspaper because I thought it would look good on my college application and I knew that colleges look for leadership positions,” says Kargol.
