Spirit Week is a week that many students are excited for. It’s a week of school spirit and fun activities like buyouts. However, what most students don’t think about is the organization that Spirit Week is raising money for. This year, that organization is the Fountain Inn Kid Enrichment, or in short, FIKE. FIKE is an after school program that meets five days a week at Capstone Church in Fountain Inn, SC. They help students from kindergarten through fifth grade with homework, and making sure they eat a nutritious dinner. Along with school help, FIKE offers fun group activities and games that teach kids character lessons.

“FIKE is basically a non-profit organization that mentors kids that are in elementary school. They give them a warm meal before they go home and [the kids] receive a lot of help with schoolwork that they don’t receive at home,” says junior Paeden Dubiel.

Besides participating in Spirit Week, you can help the organization by getting involved in other ways. For example, by becoming an “After School Buddy”, you can assist children with homework and reading. In addition, FIKE is asking for volunteers to help with their community service projects on the last Friday of each month. Another way to help FIKE is donating. Donations go towards helping expand and improve the facility so more students can attend the after school program.

“I think the idea of being a FIKE volunteer is a great way to benefit the community and spread hope for a greater tomorrow with these kids,” says junior Eva Purcell.

Before Spirit Week, Student Forum took a trip to FIKE to get to know about the organization. They also spent time with the kids and got to know how FIKE has helped them. Many of these kids don’t come from the best home situations.

“FIKE gives these kids a calm environment where they can get help with their learning. Many of these kids were never really taught manners. While we were there, they were being taught not to scream and to not be rough with each other while playing outside. It’s sad because these kids, when they’re home, have to yell to get help or attention,” says Dubiel.

Although we are helping to raise donations for FIKE during Spirit Week, it’s important to still show support for the after school program when Spirit Week ends. FIKE is looking for rising high school seniors and college graduates to apply to be after-school teachers. After-school teachers supervise students, making sure they are safe until they are picked up. This is a great way to get service hours as well as make a difference in the kids’ lives.

“I think FIKE is a really good organization that really helps kids. I hope our donations will help this organization grow,” says Junior Benjamin Yeargin.
