Anxiety loves to find anything unfamiliar and uncomfortable to make a person feel embarrassed and ashamed. This is only heightened in school; due to the pressure felt when trying to fit in, keep grades up, and juggle extracurricular activities. Fear is a constant emotion with a student who suffers from anxiety and their anxiety does not go away, only gets worse. Although anxiety is slightly different for each student, many people tend to experience similar, if not the same, symptoms.

“Anxiety feels about like an error message that does not tell you what the error is. It’s very scary when you have no idea what’s wrong and why you are so frightened,” said sophomore Sarah Neal.

Anxiety attacks are probably the worst part about anxiety because the symptoms of the disorder are heightened the most during this period of time. Throughout the day, many things can trigger anxiety attacks, such as presenting, taking tests, and making friends. Because of this, students often do not receive grades to their fullest potential because they are not able to perform as well as they could without anxiety.

“Some people that have panic attacks are convinced they are going to die because it is just that scary,” said Greenville Technical College psychology professor Michael Vargo.

People may experience trembling, sweating, nervousness, and trouble concentrating while having an anxiety attack. Anxiety attacks are different for everyone and what one person may experience may be completely different from what another person experiences.

“During my first attack I had no idea what was going on, I was just shaking and crying and it felt like it was never going to end,” said Neal

People often misuse the label anxiety when they feel stressed or uncomfortable, but it is much more than that. Anxiety takes over almost every aspect of your life. From the time you wake up, to the time you go to sleep, constant worry and fear consumes the body. This can clearly make it hard to pay attention and perform well in school.

“It feels like everything is spiraling downhill and I can’t control it. At the same time I feel like I can’t let anyone know that I’m having anxiety because I [would] feel embarrassed,” said a junior from Woodmont High School.

Attention brought to a student’s anxiety can make their anxiety much worse than it already is. For example, teachers randomly calling on a student in class or forcing them to present for a grade thinking it will help the student get out of their slump, often brings out their anxiety. The attention is brought directly onto the student and causes a buildup of anxiety, therefore causing the student to dread that class or anything involved with that class. All of this can lead to an anxiety attack at some point or another.

“It’s almost like anxiety is used as an excuse to get out of things or get attention for having it. People really don’t take anxiety as serious as they should or give it nearly enough attention for being so bad,” said sophomore Katy Patrick.

Getting on top of your work, keeping a planner to write down when things are happening and when assignments are due, focusing on anything that may help you calm down and simply having friends to support you can help with anxiety much more than one might think.

“I have never experienced an anxiety attack myself, but when a friend of mine was going through the situation, I just told them to breathe and stayed by their side until they felt better. I think it really seemed to help not just leaving them alone,” said sophomore Kelleya Byers.
