The new 2018 Snapchat update has caused quite an uproar with teenagers all around the world. Snapchat claimed that the update would upgrade the famous bitmojis, icons that Snapchat released last year. These icons are meant to look like you and are often used in selfies. However, what Snapchat changed with this update was unexpected.

“I really don’t like the Snapchat update. While it makes accessing the Snaps you haven’t opened easier, it also glitches out constantly. I see random people’s stories, and that annoys me. Another con is that my friends’ stories that are public appear on a different screen from those that aren’t. All of my friends now hate watching people’s stories. I really wish they would reverse it, and I’m hearing speculation about them doing that,” says senior Skylar Brown.

However, some people were able to look on the bright side.

“The only part of the update that I like is the new ways to change your text. You can change the font, color, and add stickers. I actually really like the text style now,” says junior Victoria De Casas.

Other people also said that they loved how they updated the bitmojis.

“I love how you are able to customize your bitmojis. I can now include the ombre in my hair, and that’s really exciting for me…All I have to do is take a selfie, and it will customize it for me,” says freshman Anna Sallurday.

Many others also enjoy the new text style because of its versatility; however, some feel that the cons outweigh the pros in this situation.

“It was a completely useless update. They changed the layout of the app and made it more difficult to see people’s stories. If you are having a conversation on Snapchat and you exit the app, even for a few seconds, that person gets bumped down the list because someone updated their story or did something that Snapchat thinks you should see,” says junior Trinity Mullinax.

The chronological order change seems to be the most significant annoyance of the whole update. Many people wonder why social media is changing so much, and so rapidly.

“I think part of the problem is that we, as humans, do not like change. We prefer things to stay the same way, and the fact they are changing up social media makes us uncomfortable. However, in this case, I feel it makes sense why people are so upset because the update is honestly really bad. I hope they change it back or do something to fix it soon because now Snapchat isn’t the same [as] it used to be,” says junior Madi Lowe.

Overall, Snapchat’s recent update has left it with a 1.5-star rating in the app store. Whether or not this will improve is still up in the air.

“I really enjoy Snapchat, and it saddens me they had to change it up. I do like change, but I feel this change was really unnecessary and just created more problems for corporate,” says De Casas.
