A new school year means making new goals and breaking old habits. For Liz Simo, a sophomore at Brashier and first year newspaper staff member, she strives to stay on task and maintain better time management this year. Her favorite class, Art, helps her relax and think through priorities as she juggles school, a job at the Ice Cream Station, and sports.

“Art is a way I can express myself and it is a great stress reliever,” says Simo.

Liz has a true gift for art. She can look at an image and draw an almost perfect replica while personalizing aspects to make it her own. From drawing intricate designs and mandalas on her hands and paper to sketching the beauties of nature such as flowers, inspiration is something everyone feels when they see her beautiful, detailed work.

“I can’t remember a time in my life I wasn’t drawing; I really love to do it,” says Simo.

Liz started working at the Ice Cream Station this past April. She loves the atmosphere of her work. The boss and coworkers are encouraging and helpful to everyone.

“The Ice Cream Station is such a family friendly place where there is so much joy. My coworkers are great friends and everyone working together makes the time fly by,” says Simo.

This past summer, Liz went to Massachusetts for a week with her family. She also went to Los Angeles for two weeks with her dad to visit her cousins.

“Going to LA was one of the best experiences of my life. It was thrilling when I went paragliding off a cliff over the ocean,” says Simo.

Not only does Liz enjoy visiting LA, but she sees herself working there as a visual producer in her near future. While this is the job she envisions for herself, her dream job is to be an astrophysicist – someone who studies the relativity of time and space. Liz wants to do something that she is passionate about and that will continue to intrigue her in the years to come.

“The vastness of space blows my mind. I love learning about the universe because it really puts my problems into perspective,” says Simo.

Liz is on the Brashier volleyball team. As a right side hitter and defensive specialist, she gets to experience playing on different areas of the court. She plays volleyball because it’s good exercise, she loves the sport, and she is close with the girls on the team.  You can just tell by the look on their faces how much they care for each other and build one another up.

“We are a strong support system for each other. We have team bonding nights where we become closer friends as well as teammates. I think the strong connection between us helps contribute to our wins,” Simo expresses.

If Liz could go anywhere in the world, she would go to Hawaii because she’s never been anywhere so tropical.

“I would bring some paper to sketch on while lying out on the beach because I feel that a change of environment with new scenic places would inspire me. It sounds like paradise,” says Simo.

Liz has an adorable puppy named Scooter, a rat terrier. While Liz loves Scooter with all her heart, if she could have any pet in the world, it would be an albino snake. These snakes are just so intriguing to Liz. She likes all snakes and feels that our society has given them a bad reputation.

“They are unlike any other I have ever seen.  Their beady little eyes are just so darn cute!” says Simo.

Liz holds onto her goals even through stressful times. Somehow, Liz finds a way to work at the Ice Cream Station, take college classes, play volleyball, study and do homework, as well as spend time with friends and family.  With all of these commitments, she seems to be maintaining her time management goal successfully. Liz motivates others without even realizing it through her determination.  She proves that when you set your mind to something and do not give up, you can do anything you desire. She is always willing to help and listen to others. Liz is a sweet girl with big dreams and can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. She is an encouragement to all her friends and makes those around her happy.

“I set goals for my life so I can motivate myself to succeed for my future,” says Simo.
