After 16 years since the premiere of Avatar: The Last Airbender and six years since the finale of The Legend of Korra, ViacomCBS has announced a new studio based entirely around the Avatar franchise.

Avatar: The Last Airbender came out in 2005 and ran for three seasons until its conclusion in 2008. It created a world of benders, who could control one of four elements: fire, water, earth, or air. The show followed the journey of Aang, the last of his kind as an airbender and his quest as the Avatar to master all four elements. The sequel series Legend of Korra aired from 2012 to 2014 with four seasons. Set 70 years after the events of Avatar, it follows the new protagonist Korra as the next avatar. Her story involves the path of her mastering airbending and stopping the rising conflicts in Republic City.

“[Avatar] has to be one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The animation, the storytelling, the fight scenes, all of it combines to make something really amazing,” said senior Anabel Clements.

Praised for its writing, characters, and visuals, the series was met with immense popularity and critical acclaim. Its fanbase has persisted even 16 years after its release, with a great resurgence in popularity in the spring of 2020 when Avatar first came to Netflix.

“I was too young to watch Avatar when it first came out, but my older brother was obsessed with it. I watched it with him once it was put on Netflix, and now I really love it too…a ton of my friends have seen it now because it’s on there,” said freshman Blake Summers.

Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, original Avatar creators, are joining Nickelodeon as co-chief creative officers of Avatar Studios. This came as a surprise but a delight for fans, who were previously disappointed when the two left the production of Netflix’s live-action Avatar series over creative differences.

“I’m so excited to see that the original creators are gonna be back on the project. We all know what happened when they weren’t there…I don’t think it’s a stretch to say we all hate the live-action movie,” said Clements.

The studio is aiming to expand the Avatar universe with new content. The first project of the studios is an animated theatrical title set to begin production soon, to the great excitement of fans. There has been no official announcement of other projects, but the creators have hinted at more to come.

“With this new Avatar Studios venture, we have an unparalleled opportunity to develop our franchise and its storytelling on a vast scale, in myriad exciting ways and mediums…We can’t wait to build the great teams and productions to make all of this fantasy a reality,” the creators wrote in a statement released by Nickelodeon

New content for the franchise will be premiering on multiple platforms. These include Netflix, Nickelodeon, and Paramount Plus, the new Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS streaming service. With Paramount as the parent company, the studio will likely be placing heavy emphasis on the Avatar content for Paramount Plus.

The announcement of Avatar Studios has been met with great excitement and encouragement by fans. With the original creators of the show on-board and new projects in the works, the general consensus is very optimistic.
