Each weekday, when we come to school, our clothing choice is limited to the Brashier uniform of a black polo and khaki pants. However, on October 31st, all rules are thrown out the window. After students leave school, they have the freedom to wear whichever costume they choose. On Halloween, children, teens, and adults are given the opportunity to dress up as their favorite character, famous person, or funny item. This year, an Anne Frank costume for young girls has caused controversy among Halloween shoppers.

“Costumes could be taken too far depending on how they are representing the character…it could be offensive to some people,” says junior Gianna DeRosa.

In today’s politically sensitive world, negative feedback and outrage are heightened over this offensive costume.

“The Anne Frank costume could be offensive to some people because it’s related to a touchy subject in history. I feel like [the costume] is offensive to Jewish people because it’s a young girl who died during the Holocaust,” says junior KC Nicklaus.

People have voiced their discontent by posting reviews on retailer websites and even taking to Twitter to speak out about this costume. People speaking against the costume have said it trivializes Anne Frank’s life.

“Some costumes can have good intentions and be taken the wrong way. Some people are being too sensitive and putting their opinion where it does not belong, but others are coming from a good place,” says junior Anna Taylor.

Many big retailers have stopped selling this costume or changed the name of the costume to World War II Evacuee Girl. The costume, under the new name, is still being sold on Amazon.

“It’s honestly not a costume that should be worn by anyone, but World War II Evacuee Girl is a better name because it is not a costume of a specific girl who died during a horrible time in history,” says Nicklaus.

This Anne Frank costume is not the only costume that has received negative backlash. During past Halloweens, people expressed discontent over an Israeli army costume for children and an Ebola-related costume for adults. One may continue to ask if these Halloween costumes are being taken too far.

“Once you start to [wear] costumes that are [either] from terrible events in history or are offensive, then you’re taking it too far,” says DeRosa.
