One of the highly debated topics in the world is the existence of extraterrestrial lifeforms, better known as aliens. There are many different and extreme opinions regarding the topic of aliens such as the opinion that aliens don’t exist. The polar opposite of this opinion is that aliens do exist and they used to inhabit the Earth. While neither opinion has been proved or disproved, scientists have created a new device to attract the aliens.

“The kinds of lasers and telescopes that are being built today can produce a detectable signal so that an astronomer could take one look at our star and immediately see something unusual about its spectrum,” said James Clark, a scientist working on the project, in an interview with

The laser would be like a porch light to aliens. The laser would be able to reach any other life forms as far as 20,000 light years away. To do this, the laser would use a one to two megawatt laser that would be magnified through a massive 30 to 45 meter telescope. Currently, there isn’t a big enough telescope, but a telescope big enough could be seen in the future.

“If aliens exist, I think the laser could work. Maybe the aliens will see it and go to it, which will lead them to us,” said sophomore Isaac Mayernik.

The laser, in fact, would work with the evidence that the group of scientists has gathered. The beacon would use a beam of infrared radiation to stand out from the sun. The team hypothesized that the laser could be used to communicate using a Morse code-like language. This would definitely be a way to attract the attention of any extraterrestrial beings. This leaves only one question, do aliens actually exist or would scientists be signaling to no one?

“I believe in extraterrestrials, because why else would there be Area 51? Extraterrestrials are a strange and unsolved mystery,” said sophomore Kawelo Simmons.

There are many mysteries regarding extraterrestrial life forms, but the laser could solve those mysteries for humans. However, scientists should consider whether or not the laser is a wise use of resources when there is no evidence of aliens even existing.

“I think that it could be a good experiment to see if aliens would actually come to earth, and to see if there is actually other life out there [in the universe],” said sophomore Carly Alexander.

Even though the laser has a high probability of working, there is a possibility of negative consequences that come would come with it. One consequence is the laser could potentially be dangerous to look at with the naked eye. The laser would also be expensive and time-consuming. However, many people believe that this is a small price to pay to potentially see extraterrestrials, but it is only worth it if aliens actually exist. If aliens do not exist, all of this hard work will be for nothing.

When it comes down to it, this project will be a gamble, but for every risk comes a reward and, in this case, humans could potentially interact with aliens for the first time.
