On October 16, 2017, President Trump arrived in Greenville, South Carolina to endorse the new governor, Henry McMaster, for reelection. He was invited to a private fundraiser, located at the Embassy Suites on Verdae Boulevard, on behalf of McMaster’s campaign for reelection as governor. Only 1,200 people in the Upstate were invited to attend, including Brashier Middle College social studies teacher Mr. Kennedy.

“I think it was great that Trump came to Greenville, given that it put us on the national news. Also, I found it exciting to see everyone parking and trying to get a look at the president’s car. Sadly, I did not attend the fundraiser because I found the invitation too expensive,” states Kennedy.

President Trump’s endorsement came at the perfect time for McMaster’s campaign, which has not received funding recently. This has made some voters see him as politically unsteady. South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Trav Robertson stated that the real reason Trump came to South Carolina is because McMaster is weak.

“There are a lot of people in South Carolina who like Trump, so I feel that this will sway a lot of people towards McMaster. At the same time, it may cause non-Trump supporters to dislike McMaster,” states junior Eva Purcell.

Although the media was not allowed in the fundraiser, The State released a video of President Trump and McMaster sharing kind words about one another. Trump called McMaster a friend who was a big, early supporter of his campaign. President Trump also noted that McMaster loves his state and that he will be a great governor for many years to come. As well as praising McMaster, President Trump spoke about his health care and tax reform plan. He even expressed his opposition to the NFL Players kneeling during the national anthem. For many, President Trump’s arrival in Greenville South Carolina was a big deal. Some Trump supporters waited at the airport tarmac for the President to arrive. Others even attended the fundraiser.

“Greenville is not a very big political city, so it would be expected of him to go to another bigger city like Columbia,” states junior Paeden Dubiel.

For others, it was not. Many residents of the Upstate prepared for protests located in Falls Park, away from the route President Trump would be taking during his stay.

“I have no idea why Trump really came, but he came at 5:30 P.M. during rush hour. I was not able to go to my skating lesson. From this, I concluded that Trump is an orange Cheeto that not only clogs our arteries but our roads,” states Purcell.

However, the real question is whether President Trump’s endorsement will help McMaster, and if his visit gave McMaster an unfair advantage over his fellow candidates? Regardless of the answer, it was still an experience to have the President of the United States visit Greenville, South Carolina.

“I feel that Trump’s endorsement only helped with the people that were originally Trump supporters, and [his visit] did not influence non-Trump supporters in the state,” states Dubiel.
