A sexual assault was reported on Saturday, January 27th, around 12:30 a.m., from the Clemson Delta Chi Fraternity House. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed later in the week that the victim was not a Clemson student. This event prompted the university’s ten-member Interfraternity Council to meet on Sunday morning, where they placed a suspension on all social events of the nineteen fraternity houses.

“No one really knows what happened [regarding the assault], just that social events have been shut down. However, there have been rumors about Delta Chi, about [sexual assault] like that prior to this occurrence,” says Clemson student Michael Green.

Limiting events with alcohol to third party vendors will allow for a safer student environment — at least, that is what the Interfraternity Council intends.

The council’s entire statement follows, “The Interfraternity Council at Clemson University is committed to creating an environment for its members to succeed academically, philanthropically, and socially, as well as holding our members to a higher standard. Therefore, we are suspending all social events at fraternity houses effective immediately. This suspension will be effective until necessary measures are taken. Only events that can take place with alcohol will be located at third party vendors (i.e. mixers downtown and formal events)…”

Some do not understand the point of holding back parties and other fraternity events.

“Considering it wasn’t even a Clemson student who was assaulted, I don’t understand the suspension,” says senior Daniel Counihan.

The council goes on to explain in their statement that the suspension will “better our Risk-Management Policy;” acting to refine the communal atmosphere for all.

“I don’t think the community improves from this. People will still find ways to do what they want, which will probably lead to more trouble…It’s going to last until the case is closed, and, depending on the outcome, it could last for a while,” says Clemson student Cameron DiScioscia.

Regarding Delta Chi, all members have respectfully cooperated with authorities according to the fraternity’s president: “All information we know, we have given to the Oconee sheriff department. They’re handling the best that they can, and we have been assisting them with any questions they have, and being 100% transparent.” He then speaks out about the assault, stating that no brother of the fraternity was involved. However, no matter what is said by the fraternity’s president, Delta Chi could face suspension or expulsion once the investigation is over.

“If the guy was from their frat or [attended] the party I feel like the fraternity as a whole should be punished…expulsion is a little harsh, but I do feel that there needs to be a precedent set whenever these social events happen, because there is ultimately someone responsible for the attendance of [Delta Chi’s] party. It’s not just the perpetrator that is the problem, it is also the people around them that let it happen,” says English teacher Jessica Cheek.
