Looking for and pursuing a career can be a daunting task. Some people look for success and money when choosing a career, but others focus more on finding happiness and fulfillment. Almost everyone has a different opinion on what is truly more important in life.

“People need to think about money because they need to be able to pay for their life, children, and car, but happiness is more important. Without happiness, life would be dull,” says junior Chanel Teplik.

An unhappy life can take a toll on a person’s mental and physical health. Physical effects include weight gain and lowering your immune system. Mental effects can also be damaging, and pursuing a career that does not provide happiness can cause people to feel unfulfilled and unhappy.

“People that dislike their job could get depressed. I don’t want to end up as an old man with money acting like a Scrooge,” says junior Liam Baker.

Although happiness is important in life, not all can afford to look for a specific job that they love. Many people take jobs out of necessity or because they have responsibilities to take care of other people.

“If you’re out of a job and you need money, you might take a job even if you don’t like it that much,” says junior Jade Martinez.

Sometimes, a hefty salary entices people to stay in their work positions, but people may also feel like they are not in a position to change their entire lives.

“Some people might feel stuck. They might have gone to college and spent a lot of time getting a degree for one specific job. They also might not have the money or means to start over,” says sophomore Mallory Smith.

Despite the stark contrast between happiness and success, the two could work hand in hand. There are many different ways happiness and success can be obtained.

“Sometimes, people get happiness from the success they find in their career,” says Martinez.

In contrast, others may feel the opposite to be true.

“Happiness is more important in life because, if you’re doing something you like, you’ll feel successful. If I reach my goals, I’ll feel successful,” says Smith.

Success has pros and cons that both add and subtract to its value.

“A perk of success is that you’re important and you have power, but a drawback is that you could be under a lot of pressure and have to worry about your reputation,” says Teplik.

Overall, the importance of success versus the importance of happiness must be determined by individuals as they decide what success means to them and if it includes happiness.

“Society’s definition of success is different than my own. Success means being happy with what you’ve done, but everyone’s definition of success can be tailored to them,” says Baker.
