Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, but what benefits does it have for those who drink it? Most coffee drinkers are older adults, but with many coffee franchises, such as Starbucks, younger adults and teens are beginning to consume a lot more of it. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, the daily recommended amount of caffeine is 250mg. This is equivalent to three 8oz cups of coffee. 75% of teens drink coffee, but why is it so popular among younger individuals?

“You have to remember that there are other forms of caffeine too, such as energy drinks and chocolate,” says junior Chanel Teplik.

Most of these young adults and teens are still in school and will drink coffee in the morning to keep awake in class. How helpful is coffee actually for these students? Coffee is known for giving a temporary boost of energy, which can help with studying. Coffee can also have a positive effect on memory. According to the research conducted at Hopkins University, the caffeine in coffee can enhance certain memories up to 24 hours after it is consumed. Coffee also protects these memories from being forgotten. Along with memory, caffeine can also help improve cognitive performance and concentration.

“I’ve been drinking coffee for a while now, and I never knew all the benefits it has for memory,” states junior Gianna DeRosa.

With positive effects also comes negative effects. Some of these include anxiety, restlessness, jittery feelings, upset stomach, muscle tremors, stomach cramps, irritability, and a racing heart rate. This can ruin cognitive performance by making it hard to focus in class or on school work. Caffeine can also ruin teens’ sleep schedules, keeping them up all night and preventing them from getting enough sleep. As a result of not getting enough sleep, students are not able to concentrate during school. Another negative effect is that students can become dependent on coffee and can experience withdrawal symptoms.

“I don’t drink too much coffee or caffeine, so I have never experienced any of these negative experiences,” states Teplik.

Overall, coffee has many great short term effects on studying and concentrating in class. However, having too much coffee can be dangerous and have a negative impact on students.

“Yes, there are negative symptoms from drinking coffee, but also some good ones, too. I really love coffee and I don’t see myself stopping drinking it,” says freshman Annie Vo.
