The long-awaited Animal Crossing: New Horizons has finally arrived at Nintendo Switch. This is my first Animal Crossing game, and I’m having a blast with it so far. But, what can you expect from the game?

The game is heavily based on time and location. This means the area will change depending on the seasons and has a real-time day and night cycle. Along with that, the game world needs time to replenish resources, which it will do when you launch the game the next day.

Once you’ve arrived at your island of choice, you are given a quick tutorial in the form of orientation. After it is completed you are synced up with real-time, and the first task is to pay off your moving fees in Nook Miles, which are basically travel miles.

So far in my game, I’ve laid my property on the beach, upgraded my tent to a house, and helped get a museum up and running. It sounds like no progress, but it takes a while.

The most fun I’ve had with the game so far has been fishing. The fishing took me a little getting used to but it’s very easy to pick up. There’s no shortage of fish as there are 80 species of fish to collect. Additionally, there are 80 species of bugs to find rounding up to a total of 160 species to collect in-game, which can be donated to the museum or can be sold in the shop.

The most annoying things in the game so far have been the wasps, spiders, and waiting for resources to replenish. Wasps occur when you shake or chop down a tree. To get rid of the wasps, you must use a net to catch them. Like wasps, the spiders can be stopped and caught with nets and then they can be sent to the museum or can be sold in the store.

The most annoying out of everything is the wait time. The game has an excessive amount of waiting. You can gather materials to craft and do in the meantime, but when you run out of materials to craft, it goes back to more waiting.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a nice breath of fresh air from all the mainstream action games. Although some things were frustrating, the game is still nice and calming to play. All we’re missing now is a Doom crossover.
