As the year is coming to an end,

and a new one is about to start,

New Year’s resolutions are much like

the European armies against Napoleon Bonaparte.

-A New Year’s Poem

New Year’s resolutions are personal goals that are made by a person to improve oneself. They are made everywhere by many people, though they are not always achieved.

“New Year’s resolutions, to me, are an attempt to change a habit or start doing something that you previously have not been doing with the hopes it’s going to improve something in your life or make a difference in a positive way,” says math teacher Jeff Inman.

Though many people do not know their origin, New Year’s resolutions have an old history. It is believed that these resolutions began with the ancient Babylonians. At the beginning of their year, they made promises to their gods to pay debts and give back anything that they had borrowed. These promises became the ancestors of New Year’s resolutions. There is a similar practice with the Romans, who offered sacrifices to the Roman god, Janus, and made promises of good behavior for the New Year. Janus was a two-faced god thought to inhabit doorways and arches, so the Romans believed he symbolically looked back at the past and looked ahead to the future.

“I think [resolutions] originated from Europe because, with America in the works of being established, they use resolutions as a way to be better,” says junior Paeden Dubiel.

Many people make New Year’s resolutions, but only a few actually follow through with them. There are many possible reasons why someone doesn’t stick to their resolution.

“People see how hard it is to stick to them and it also just depends on what the resolutions are,” says sophomore David Thompson.

Though there are people who make resolutions at the beginning of the year, is it really necessary to have a time of year to make resolutions and become a better person?

“We should try to be great all the time, but, sometimes, life is hard, and it is hard to devote to them. Some people believe that the beginning of the year is a new era for them and everyone else,” says junior Kenya Adams.

There are also different views about New Year’s resolution. Some think that they are useful if you stick to it, while others think that they are just pointless.

“I don’t have a problem with New Year resolutions, I just don’t know that they are always effective. I think it is okay if it’s meant to be positive…and help out someone in a situation,” says Inman.

Though New Year’s resolutions seem pointless to some, they are still made by many. There are even those who have one made for the coming year.

“I will watch The Office again, but in a course of two weeks. It will make me feel better,” says Beaule.

Every year, we make resolutions to change ourselves and our lifestyles. We either stick with them or we end up realizing we are way over our head. Either way, New Year’s resolutions reflect who we are.

“It could be dealing with health. It could be someone sees that they have an unhealthy lifestyle or habits that they want to change. I can see that being a benefit that they are trying to change that habit and be healthier,” says Inman.
