Disney Channel has been named the top channel for kids and teens in the United States. However, its popularity has been declining since 2010. In 2010, there were almost 42 million weekly viewers; now, there are only about 31 million. Over ten million people have stopped watching Disney Channel weekly. Coincidence? I think not.

Some of the shows that were most popular in 2010 were Kim Possible, That’s So Raven, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana, and Good Luck Charlie. These shows were based on different teenagers’ unique lives. For instance, Kim was a superhero, Raven was psychic, Zack and Cody lived in a hotel, the Russos were wizards, Hannah was secretly a famous popstar, and the Duncans had a very large and crazy family. Each episode was a new story about their exciting lives. Now, however, most Disney shows have deeper stories that are centered around the lives of normal people. Often times, these stories involve themes such as dating and extreme friend or family drama, even though the main characters are often in middle school. These new shows can contain harmful storylines, especially if children imitate the characters in the shows. Not only do children’s shows have to be entertaining, but they should also be committed to teaching the younger generations about important values and not encouraging damaging ones.

The Disney Channel programs have always starred young actors. However, the themes that these young actors are portraying have changed. The actors used to play characters close to themselves in age, and portrayed themselves as young. Now, Disney has actors who wear much more makeup to make themselves appear older. Today’s culture is increasingly pushing a harsher focus on makeup and fashion onto younger children. Disney also has its characters in trendy, expensive-looking clothing. The company even releases various clothing lines based on Disney shows and movies. These materialistic components of Disney programs are teaching young adults and children that your appearance is more important than your personality, which opposes many of the standards the old Disney Channel stood for.

Although Disney Channel may not be showing the old Disney programs, they are still easily accessible with today’s technology, right? Actually, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to watch or stream old Disney Channel shows. The common streaming sites, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, have limited selections of Disney programs and movies. There is a possibility of Disney creating their own private streaming service. However, the likelihood of Disney including their old shows is very slim. For example, a few months ago Disney had a marathon weekend celebrating the highly successful actress Zendaya. However, they never mentioned the older show she starred in, Shake it Up, despite its previous popularity. It seems as though old Disney Channel shows will soon be forgotten.
