It’s seventh period at Unity High School in West Los Angeles,  where students gather in Gunther Parigaliy’s Multimedia Studies class. Parigaliy introduces the following quote, “In September 2013, four young musicians began a journey–traveling through a portal where space, time, and music intersect.” The students of the Multimedia Studies class must apply this quotation to a particular interest. Suddenly, students begin shouting out ideas for the class project.

“I’ll start a band,” shouts Guitarist Riley Ripintyme.

Two weeks later, Ripintyme started asking people to join the band: Drummer Vincent Tarrega, Vocalist Langston Labelle, and Bassist Akemi Lee. Several students got on board and helped create a blog, create artwork, and promote the band’s EP, Playing Her Guitar Suite.

This EP needs no genre or label to identify itself; it’s very unique and immediately grabs the listener’s attention.”

A Look into the EP Playing Her Guitar Suite

Playing Her Guitar Suite is a beautiful EP featuring three very addicting songs: “Playing Her Guitar” and two instrumental songs, “Twisted Road” and “Suite Dream.”  The theme explored throughout each song is an endless journey through time and space. It has a very positive vibe and very smooth and soothing harmonics that listeners will really enjoy.

The EP itself is like stepping directly into the 1970’s and 1980’s with its memorable and catchy tunes as well as its incredible guitar solos. This EP needs no genre or label to identify itself; it’s very unique and immediately grabs the listener’s attention. For example, the song “Twisted Road” has this very hard rock feel with excellent guitar riffs. Once I first heard the EP, I was hooked. I kept playing the songs repeatedly. My favorite song from the EP would have to be “Playing Her Guitar.”

The Making of “Playing Her Guitar”

Ripintyme is alone in her room practicing a guitar picking exercise she received from her guitar teacher. The exercise contains open strings with wide skips. She starts to get bored, so she adds a hammer on the 6th to 8th frets.

“Hmm, that doesn’t sound too bad,” thinks Ripintyme.

She continues the right-hand picking and keeps the 2nd and 3rd strings in her open and begins humming a tune while playing the chord progression. Tarrega and Labelle enter the room while Ripentyme plays the chords.

“Hey, don’t stop playing. That sounds cool, what you’re doing,” says Labelle.

According to Labelle, he and Ripintyme performed separately on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. They had seen each other, but had never officially met until Tarrega introduced them.

“This? It’s just a guitar exercise,” says Ripintyme.

According to Labelle, he believes the inspiration from the songs came from Ripintyme’s guitar playing.

“Well whatever it is, I like it,” says Labelle.

Labelle begins singing the lyrics, “All alone in her room with all her music,” and he soon writes the lyrics for the song, “Playing Her Guitar.”

The Unique Qualities of Playing Her Guitar Suite

The overall beauty in “Playing Her Guitar” blows my mind. The song is delightfully composed  and  is very well- balanced. I really enjoy listening to the vocal harmonizing in this song; the overall effect of the vocals gives me chills. The vocals sound amazing with the chord progression and bass lines; it gives the song a very mystical feel while the drums tie the song together.  The instrumental track, “Twisted Road”, is an excellent follow up to “Playing Her Guitar”. This song has incredible guitar and bass riffs with a very smooth vibe.  Lastly, “Suite Dream,” has a very dreamy sound to it and is a fantastic ending to the EP.

The Playing Her Guitar Suite  EP includes a 24 page graphic novella booklet with very detailed and excellent sketches. The order of the songs gives an impression that really works. If you follow the graphic novella while listening to the EP, it’s like going on a journey with the band. It’s quite impressive and really allows listeners to use their imagination.   The EP itself sounds like freedom. It makes you want to go on an adventure and to travel the world. It has a very professional, light sound with a more adventurous feel. This EP inspired me to pick up my guitar, which was collecting in dust, and actually learn to play it.  It’s been an honor speaking with the band members and can’t wait for their future projects.
