The United States is truly a diverse country, with dozens of ethnicities, races, religions, backgrounds, and of course, political views. These differences set us apart from each other and create the well-known “melting pot” of the world. Each of these factors contribute to the variation in our nation and bring something new to the table. However, our differences, specifically in politics, might be our greatest weakness.

“There are so many cultures and beliefs that everyone is forming their own opinions and creating their own groups. They don’t feel like changing their perspective, so they form these groups and it divides the country,” said sophomore Corey Golec.

In the U.S.A, especially as of recently, there have always been conflicting political parties: Republican and Democrat. The clashing views of these groups often come up in daily conversations, heated arguments, and of course, the news. Politically leaning news channels, such as FOX or CNN, spread information that causes feuds between families, friends, and people we have no relation to. In turn, people are pressured into picking sides, creating a conflicted, divided, and corrupt nation.

“People are ignorant about other people’s views and perspectives,” said sophomore Kaitlyn Morgan.

The last time the United States has felt a true feeling of nationalism and patriotism, which of course, the definitions of these words depends on the person,  was after 9/11. We were all American, regardless of where we came from, what we looked like, or what political side we favored. Over the last 18 years however, this country has moved away from our “One Nation, Under God” mindset, and towards a “You’re Wrong, and Here’s Why” attitude. Because of this, we as citizens are divided and are forced to choose sides.

“It depends on how you define nationalism. It could be a good thing for our country, but it could also be a bad thing,” said sophomore Luke Mulcahy.

Differentiating views between conservatives and liberals lead to people pointing fingers and making assumptions that their side is in the right, when in reality, neither side is completely correct. However, both sides have positive characteristics, so there is no reason to choose and divide our country. If everyone could agree with this, then our country would be much more civilized, and we could find ways that both Republicans and Democrats could share their views in a safe and comfortable environment; everyone wins, and the nation would prosper because of it.

“I don’t think we can ever be fully united. Again, people are ignorant and unwilling to change their perspective, even if it’s for the better of the nation. Everyone will always have different beliefs,” said Golec.
