The Brashier volleyball team always strives for greatness. Through the thick and thin of this season, the team has endured summer conditioning, endless hours of training, and several games. Getting to the top of their region this year will be tough, but the girls are determined. Together, the girls know they are all part of a cohesive team. Their friendship is what truly pushes them to the next level.

“I think that the girls on the team really work well together because we are all such close friends off the court,” says sophomore Brianna Hammersmith.

The team is mostly comprised of underclassmen. With three freshmen, eight sophomores, and three seniors, the girls all share a love and respect for each other.

“The team is very young this year, which can be challenging at times, but it is also cool because, by the time they are all seniors, the girls will work strongly together,” says senior Blake Roth.

Dig Pink Week is the volleyball team’s goal to raise money for the ‍Side Out Foundation. The organization focuses on fundraising for women battling breast cancer, and all the profits the team raises during Dig Pink Week goes towards the foundation.

“Dig Pink Week is my favorite time during school volleyball. All the students get really involved in the fundraisers we do, and it’s really fun to see all my friends come out to support the team!” says sophomore Sophia Dalbey.

Traditionally, the girls make posters, coordinate a bake sale, and have a week of fun planned for the school. At the end of the week, the grand finale is the Dig Pink Game on Friday. Brashier students pack the stands for this game, and deck themselves out in pink attire.

“When we see students having a good time, we know we planned it well and all the hard work was worth it,” says Roth.

The team is coached by Haleigh Horgan, who has played volleyball since seventh grade and has coached the Bengals since 2014.

“I played volleyball in college for NGU, and volleyball has been a big passion of mine for a long time. I enjoy watching the girls grow as volleyball players, and I think of them as my family. Whenever a girl needs advice or help, they know they can always come to me,” says Horgan.

The Bengal volleyball team is hoping to advance to state this year, as this has been a goal for the team since the season started. It will be tough for the girls because their competition is fierce.

“My goal for this season is to win state. Brashier has never won state at any sport before, so it would be amazing for us to bring a banner home,” says middle hitter and sophomore Valentina Fiegl.

The girls’ big dreams will come with hard work, competitiveness, sweat, and determination. However, there is nothing a Brashier Bengal can’t accomplish with the right attitude.

“Playing for this team is my favorite part of going to Brashier,” says Dalbey.
