The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, passed a law that plans to provide tuition-free college for students of middle class working families who want to attend public universities. This decision made in New York is not only being praised there, and some South Carolinians are delighted by the fact that New York is offering this to middle class students.

“I think it’s great because some extremely intelligent people are not fortunate enough to be able to gain a college education. If you put more people from the streets into schools and on jobs, we’ll have more people living up to their potential,” says senior Rebekah Sherer.

This decision was a great move for New York because many people who want to go to college don’t have the financial ability to pay for it. Some believe this will inspire others to go back to school and get their education.

“This may inspire people to go to school and take school more seriously. I feel like it is a motivation for success to get more people involved and make this world better. There are individuals out there who do not go to school or do not take school seriously and this free tuition could encourage them to go out there, obtain a career, and use their creative minds for the better of themselves and society,” says senior Lyla Warsi.

Education is an important component of our society, especially in the United States. Many jobs that hire nowadays require a person to have some form of a degree from college. Most career fields that are needed in our society, such as nursing, doctoring, and more require that a student have a degree.

“Education is and always will be important. Without education we would have no doctors, teachers, lawyers, dentists, etc.,” says senior Kendall Phillips.

Many people see this plan of having tuition-free college as a good idea with plenty of advantages. There would be lower poverty rates and there wouldn’t be a shortage on so many jobs.

“The overall advantages of tuition is motivation of gaining a good career with free education. If you worked hard before, you will continue to work hard when the college is giving you a free ride. ” says Warsi.

Many others see the plan of having a tuition-free college as a bad idea with some disadvantages. It could increase the prices of taxes which would lead to more problems for the American people.

“No tuition for all colleges sounds awesome in theory, but it wouldn’t work due to the fact that we have other money issues that need to be fixed such as the way taxes are issued.” says Phillips.

Despite the fact that there are advantages and disadvantages – as there is to every situation – most people are still rejoicing about New York’s decision to make 4 year universities have free tuition. Maybe one day South Carolina will do the same…

We need to step up to the plate … to meet the needs of employers and families, who cannot afford to send their kids to get a technical school education,” said state Sen. Karl Allen, D-Greenville.
