Morning Time

Doc think I’m crazy. He no say so to me. But I see it in his eyes. Today I has a sandwich with lots of peanut butter. Was real good. Saw little birdie chirping outside so I was opening window to say hello. Doc got real mad. Don’t know why. Said hello to Jenna and Rae. Feed them crickets but they was still real hungry. Here come Doc. Doc say it time for travel.

October 1st, 1923

Patient Z is mentally degrading quicker than I expected. I just finished putting her away in the solitary room, and it almost broke her heart to leave those two pet frogs I was allowing her to keep. Now I can keep a better eye on her development and the effects of the new medicine I’m experimenting with. However, there is one thing I’m quite curious about. She kept mentioning some tall man standing in the corner of the large asylum room last night. It seems to almost consume the poor wretch. Of course, it may be a side effect of the treatment I am injecting her with. I’m allowing her to keep a small journal in which she can record her thoughts so that I may be able to study the psychology of patients like her and apply it to my future work. She’s a heck of a case study all right. My new research just might be ground-breaking.

Night Time

I scared. I all alone in dark room. First night all alone. Doc say it good for me to keep writing. So I tell you everything I be seeing. Cup of water beside me bed. Grey curtains over small window. No Jenna and Rae. Tall dark man standing in corner. He be having black cloth over face. I say hello but he no want to talk. Just keep staring at me.

Patient Z is responding wonderfully to my experiments. If she keeps reacting to the injections at this rate, her brain cells should be almost all frozen by next week. I’m not sure what I will do with the corpse though. Legally, I can’t dispose of a corpse without the brain, and I’ll obviously be studying the frozen brain to find a cure for patients like her. Mother and Father came to visit my asylum today, and I’ll never forget how proud they were of Patient Z. “Why Charles,” Father told me. “If your medicine actually works on this girl, you may have just found the cure for the imbeciles I have to work with.” We shared a chuckle, and I didn’t even know Father had a sense of humor. They seemed to be proud of me. Of course, I’ll never tell Father and Mother about Claudia. They would be appalled if they knew I was spending time away from my experiments to visit a lowly secretary I have feeling for. Father and Mother always told me as a child you can either be successful or happy, “You can’t be both Charles.” However, I am concerned with the amount of hallucinations Patient Z is seeing at night. Perhaps I should scale back the injections I administer. I only hope she doesn’t end up like Patient R. What a waste of an experimental subject.

Day Time

Head hurts lots. Doc keep poking me with pointy thing every time he bring food. Say I need to keep writing. Just want Jenna and Rae back. And big room. Doc give stuffed rabbit to me. I name it Flopsy. Doc say no worry and it all be over soon. Last night dark man was in corner. Doc told me he no real. Just in head. I not sure if I believe him. Dark man look real to me. Flopsy think so too.

I just returned from a lovely dinner with Claudia. My, what a woman! She’s simply indescribable. I might invite her to accompany me to the horse derby next weekend. With my seemingly never-ending studies on Patient Z, I think I have forgotten how beautiful normal women actually are. Claudia has the brightest smile, the most luxurious copper locks, and the most vibrant coffee eyes. Oh Claudia, will you ever marry me? But of course not! Why would an ordinary woman want to spend the rest of her life at an insane asylum bringing dinner to a husband who studies outcasts? Oh Claudia, why would a wonderful woman like you want to live a life like mine, surrounded by walking experiments who claim to see dark figures in their room at night? After my terrible mistake on Patient R, I cannot bear to allow anyone else to live in this blasted asylum. Please, Claudia, for God’s sake, don’t marry me.

Night Time

Feel real bad. Can’t sleep at all. I is still writing in book. Dark Man in corner. He still no talk. Just stare at me. Here come Doc. Doc has pointy thing. Oh, dark man say hello to Doc. Why Doc scared? Doc, why you run away? Who Patient R? Silly Doc. His name Dark Man. Better go check Doc. Think he sleeping. Has red stuff on shirt. Oh, here come Dark Man. He gonna say hello to me.
