The United States of America is a patchwork of several different cultures, ethnicities, religions, and races. However, some immigrants come to America illegally, and recently the public’s attention has been drawn to the Mexico – U.S. border, where President Trump proposes to construct a wall to prevent illegal immigration. According to the Pew Research Center, the peak of illegal immigration occurred in 2007, in which illegal immigrants made up four percent of the U.S. population. With a recent spotlight on two migrant Guatemalan children’s deaths under the U.S. Border Patrol and a government shutdown over President Trump’s proposed wall, the American public is watching the illegal immigration crisis unfold.

“I don’t agree with Trump on a lot of stuff, but I do think that his view on immigration is better than doing nothing. If [illegal immigrants] come here, we have to support them in their transition to the United States, and they would take away from the job market. [However, building a wall] is going to be a huge waste of money, which could be used to improve their countries. [Therefore], it would be better if we helped them where they are right now. Building a wall will only make it where we will not see the issue, but it will still be there,” said senior Chad Lowe.

Others have different opinions on President Trump’s reasoning behind building the wall.

“[President Trump] is building a wall to stop illegal immigration and kind of make a statement that we don’t support immigration. [Building the wall] wouldn’t change much in America, but it will give us respect from other countries for making a statement [on immigration] whether it is bad or good,” said sophomore Krystal Villanueva.

Rather than constructing a solid wall, some students offered a different solution to stop illegal immigration into America.

“[President Trump] is pushing for a wall because he said that he would as part of his campaign promise. It’s kind of an empty promise. [Instead of building a wall], I would send more security to the border and impose a stricter punishment on those who try to cross the border,” said junior Uriel Coffi.

Whether constructing a wall between the U.S. – Mexico border is beneficial or negative, one of the main factors contributing to why President Trump has pushed for a wall is the opioid addiction issue on the rise within the states.

“The goal is to stop the drug problem in America, and the wall will hopefully stop that. You can look around the world and see that walls work. Israel, the Vatican, and even other people’s houses all have walls, and they work. In the portion of our country that has walls, illegal immigration has dropped already,” said a student who wishes to be anonymous.

However, some argue that drugs will still filter into America and continue to be a hot button issue even if the wall is built.

“I don’t think a wall would stop drugs [from entering the U.S.]. It’s a waste of money. Walls are an old and ineffective way to keep people out. There aren’t enough concrete facts to back it up, no pun intended. To build the wall, they would need to take land from American citizens, and it would take years to build,” said senior Liam Baker.

There may also be other issues besides drug smuggling that have encouraged President Trump to stand by his proposed wall.

“I believe we should have a wall. We have to have borders, and we need restrictions on who can come into this country. Unfortunately, there have been a lot of United States citizens killed by illegals, and I think it’s ridiculous for us to not have some restrictions. Until we can start taking care of ourselves, we shouldn’t let anybody in [illegally],” said English teacher Rosemary Abercrombie.

Others support President Trump’s campaign to construct a wall on the Mexico – U.S. border due to different reasons, such as the President’s desire to put America first.

“I support [the wall] because [President Trump] is trying to put the American people first, which is his duty as President. I am hoping the Democrats will agree to the wall budget because Trump is just trying to look after his people,” said junior Mary Grace.

Currently, the United States government is shut down over President Trump’s proposed wall budget; however, a compromise may be reached soon.

“[Republicans and Democrats] should just come to a compromise [about the wall] even though neither side wants to budge. I think they have to because otherwise they are going to get a lot of backlash,” said senior Alexis McCullough.

Whichever compromise the Republicans and Democrats in Congress hopefully agree upon in the near future, some believe that President Trump’s wall should never be enacted.

“The Senate or Republicans in Congress are eventually going to have to do something because Trump is wasting time and spending a lot of money on building a wall we don’t need. He wants to make America great again, but we never were great. This country is made by immigrants, founded by immigrants, and he’s going against them. They have this American Dream that they’ll be safe, and we’re not giving them their safety,” said sophomore Alia Abbas.

Nonetheless, others think that supporting President Trump in his endeavors as president is the correct choice.

“I think [President Trump] is doing a wonderful job. If people would just sit back and see the good he is doing…the economy is the best it’s ever been. While I don’t necessarily agree with everything that comes out of his mouth, he does have our best interest at heart,” said Abercrombie.
