With the New Year, we can finally say goodbye to the horrible time that was 2020 and hello to the promises of 2021 (Photo credit to Beton Studio).

2020 was, indeed, a terrible year. For our generation, it’s possibly the worst year we’ve ever had to live through. However, it’s the dawn of a new day, and we’re all hoping for a universal reset. While it’s been chaotic so far, there are still aspects to look forward to in the new year.

Perhaps the most highly anticipated aspect of 2021 is the COVID-19 vaccine being fully administered. 2021 will hopefully see the full return of public spaces once the cases are sufficiently lowered, and we’ll be getting close to getting “back to normal”.

“I’m so ready for everything to open back up. It’s been too long, I really want to hang out with my friends normally again,” said sophomore Dennis Fletcher.

In the world of space exploration, 2021 is an exciting year; we’ll have a Mars landing with a new rover, Perseverance, in February. Its mission is to find signs of life on the planet. It will be collecting samples of rock and regolith to return to Earth.

A new year means many new movie releases. Raya and the Last Dragon, following the second Asian Disney princess as she tracks down the last dragon of her world, comes out in March and is a highly anticipated Disney release. In April, John Krasinski’s acclaimed film A Quiet Place is releasing its sequel, following the Abbott family as they face the outside world. Also in the world of sequels, the beloved 90s film Space Jam is getting one of its own in July.

“I’m really excited for [Raya and the Last Dragon] — I watched the trailer for it, it looks so pretty!” said freshman June Massey.

2021 is also a big year for Marvel fans. In May, the Black Widow movie is finally coming out after the release being pushed back several times. It’ll explore Natasha Romanova’s backstory, which many fans are excited to see. There will be many new TV series releases on Disney Plus, including WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki. With these releases being teased since 2019, it’s a highly anticipated year for fans.

“2021 is gonna be such a good year for Marvel…I’m really pumped for Loki. It feels like it’s been forever since it’s been announced,” said Fletcher.

Further in the realm of entertainment, there are plenty of exciting video game releases in 2021. There are many sequels this year, including God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon: Forbidden WestFar Cry 6, Hitman 3, and FNAF: Security Breach. With the new wave of consoles released, including the PS5 and the Xbox Series X, it’ll be a great year for gaming.

“I’m really excited for Ragnarok. All God of War games are so good, and I’m excited to play one on a PS5,” said senior Bree Crowther.

Overall, while 2020 has been a rough year for all of us, we can finally say goodbye to it and start anew with 2021. There are plenty of things to look forward to this year, and a little optimism wouldn’t hurt anyone.
